Recall Alert: Ram HD Truck Fire Risk

Ram has issued a recall order for more than 300,000 diesel engine heavy-duty trucks and asked owners to park them outdoors until dealers have time to complete a repair that could reduce fire risk.

The company says its engineers have "discovered the intake heater-grid relays on certain vehicles" can overheat. The company is aware of six fires but no injuries that may be related to the problem.

Five occurred while the engines were still on, but one occurred in a parked truck with the engine off.

All the recalled models use a 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel engine and an older-generation heater-grid relay Ram no longer uses in its trucks.

The company believes that not every recalled truck will have the dangerous relay. So dealers will first inspect recalled trucks to see whether they contain the old-design relay implicated in the fires. If it's there, they’ll replace it with a newer design model. If it isn't, replacement isn't necessary.
